Description: In this brief article we offer a holistic analysis of an emerging global trend where universities around the world are collaborating with local government, industry and civic organisations to bring about a transformation to sustainability in a specific town, city or region. We interpret this phenomenon through the lens of a function that we refer to as 'co-creation for sustainability'. We argue that, as well as being a significant deviation from the dominating paradigm of entrepreneurialism and technology-transfer in service of economic growth, this collaborative function harbours considerable potential to drive a transition process towards sustainability and resiliency.
