NUS & People & Planet’s Fossil Fuel Declaration


Over a third of UK universities have now committed to divest from fossil fuels and 9 universities have signed NUS and People & Planet’s Fossil Fuel Declaration!

NUS and People & Planet’s exclusive with the Times Higher Education, which can be found here, announces that:

  • Over a third of UK universities have taken action to exclude fossil fuel companies from their investment portfolios, with commitments ranging from policy changes with specific exclusions on investing in all fossil fuel companies to announcements that coal and stands companies have been blacklisted by universities fund managers;
  • Over 50% of Russell Group universities have excluded fossil fuel companies from their investment portfolios, alongside a third of post-92 institutions and over a quarter of the former 94 group;
  • 9 universities (Canterbury Christ Church University, University of Chester, University for the Creative Arts, University of Cumbria, Newman University, Wrexham Glyndŵr University, York St John University, Writtle University College and the University of Winchester) have affirmed their fossil free status and committed to remain so in the future by signing the Fossil Fuel Declaration;
  • And internationally, UK higher education institutions are leading the way in screening fossil fuel companies from their investment portfolios.

Sustainable Change Through User Engagement - PowerZee at Nanyang Technological University

Many successful behavioural economics/psychology inspired experiments on nudges show the potential for energy conservation/sustainable change. NTU along with industry partner ENGIE embarked on developing a smartphone app for interactive user engagement using the sociological concept of nudging and a gamification based approach.

  • Combining sociological concepts and gamifications elements
  • Using an app to foster sustainable change through user engagement
  • Using crowdsourced data to interact with Facility Management and building users

Objectives & Methodology

Main objectives:

  1. foster sustainable behaviour practices
  2. raise awareness about sustainability

A sociological study was done after the first experimental phase of PowerZee from mid-February until mid-June 2015. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used:

  • 7 face-to-face interviews
  • Workshop with 15 students
  • Online survey with 700 participants

Analysis was used to upgrade PowerZee app.

The study suggests that the use of PowerZee app increases the awareness about energy consumption and fosters ecofriendly behaviour. The feedback received from students and staff was very useful to upgrade PowerZee. The new version of PowerZee app has been launched at different schools/universities in Singapore and France. Further deployments are planned. The energy saving potential for campuses is about 5-10% of the total consumed energy.

San Diego State University joins the ISCN!

San Diego State University is the oldest higher education institution in San Diego. Since its founding in 1897, the university has grown to become a leading public research university. Each year, SDSU provides more than 35,000 students with the opportunity to participate in an academic curriculum distinguished by direct contact with faculty and an international emphasis that prepares them for a global future.

Global climate change, energy shortages, loss of species and ecological diversity, deforestation, environmental pollution, and acidifying oceans, combined with vast differences in political power and wealth, lend urgency to studies devoted to sustainable policies and environmental management. The SDSU sustainability program is intended to meet these challenges by enabling students to explore the interacting cultural, sociopolitical, and biophysical aspects of complex environmental problems and devise practical solutions. To accomplish this, sustainability majors are introduced to concepts and methodologies from the humanities, social sciences, and the natural sciences and gain an interdisciplinary understanding of the many pressing environmental issues facing the nation and the world," states SDSU Sustainability.
