2018 WEF-GULF ISCN Report: Educating with Purpose

2018 iscn gulf thumbnailAt the World Economic Forum, the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN) in collaboration with the Global University Leader Forum (GULF) shared exemplary campus sustainability case studies provided by 42 the world’s leading universities all focused on sustainable development. 

It is more urgent than ever to equip our students and higher education institutions with the knowledge and practical examples of sustainable development. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) developed by the United Nations are one highly recognizable way to map sustainable activities on our campuses.

Higher education institutions serve as a catalyst for change and the collection of case studies by members of the ISCN and GULF reflect the sophistication of sustainability in higher education institutions and purposeful contribution to the SDGs to enhance the surrounding community and world.

2017 WEF-GULF ISCN Report: Educating for Sustainability

At the World Economic Forum, the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN) in collaboration with the Global University Leader Forum (GULF) shared exemplary campus sustainability case studies provided by 30 of the world’s leading universities all focused on educating for sustainability.  

In 2016 we saw the ratification of the Paris Agreement and global acceptance of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that address issues that touch all of society and all sectors. “In our opinion, it is time for the academic community to seriously rethink and redefine its role in society and in sustainable development efforts.” say René Schwarzenbach, ISCN Board President, and Guido Schidt-Traub, Executive Director, Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) in a co-authored foreword for the report. “The global higher education sector has a tremendous opportunity to lead the world in sustainable development research, promotion of solutions, and support for implementation.”

By including sustainable development in the strategic goals for all their activities, universities can create an environment that promotes holistic education of all students. To complement professional and disciplinary education, they can expose students to the practical problems that must be solved in order to achieve the SDGs. They can foster the acquisition of critical, systems-oriented thinking as well as the ability to communicate with various stakeholders within and outside academia.

2016 WEF-GULF ISCN Report: Demonstrating Sustainable Development in Higher Education

At the World Economic Forum, the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN) in collaboration with the Global University Leader Forum (GULF) shared exemplary campus sustainability case studies provided by the world’s leading universities.  This state-of-the-art report is focused on developing skills and building capacities of our future leaders, collaborating to catalyze change, and innovating for efficient built environments.

The past year marked an important milestone for sustainable development.  We saw the conclusion of the United Nations climate negotiations (COP21) in Paris, setting the direction and gaining the support of all nations in limiting CO2 emissions to prevent temperature increases over the upcoming decades. Now the work to realize the commitments made in Paris in practice begins.

2015 WEF-GULF ISCN Report: Developing Skills for Future Leaders

2015 marks the fifth year since the ISCN partnered with the Global University Leader Forum, an initiative of the World Economic Forum (WEF) to further knowledge exchange on campus sustainability at the executive level.

At the 2015 WEF-GULF annual meeting 25 of the world's leading universities from 15 countries shared sustainability best practice case studies focused on educating future leaders by full immersion in a "living laboratory" environment for sustainability.

Additionally, Peter Bakker, President and CEO of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), provided a foreword that encourages the dialogue between universities and corporations on developing sustainability skills needed by future business leaders.

2014 WEF-GULF ISCN Report: Best Practice in Campus Sustainability

In 2009, the ISCN partnered with a World Economic Forum (WEF) initiative bringing together the heads of 26 top global universities, to develop the Sustainable Campus Charter.  Organized into 3 core principles, the Charter requires a commitment at the highest level of the institution, and includes annual reporting on sustainability goals, initiatives, and performance. 

At the 2014 WEF annual meeting, 23 of the world’s leading universities representing 11 countries shared exceptional best practice case studies with presidents of GULF member institutions to enhance the global dialogue on sustainability in higher education. The culmination of these cases may be found in the state-of-the-art report, Best Practice in Campus Sustainability.
